Newton Day |

On June 10th we had our first fundraiser at the Newton Day festivities. It turned out to be a fantastic event and we couldn't be happier about the outcome. It all started up during the daytime with our tent on Spring Street. We had a constant flow of people coming through during the day. At times it was almost overwhelming. Everyone wanted to know who we are and what we are about. Once they understood the scope of our mission, the support was amazing. Every single person that came through (young and old alike) agreed that a public skateboard park is exactly what our community needs. We were also really busy collecting petition signatures and selling raffle tickets. Just about every kid that came through wanted to win one of those skateboards. This went on for 6 hours straight with almost no break in the action the entire time.
In the evening things got even more exciting. We brought in about six skateboard ramps to the basketball courts at Memory Park. We lined up two teams from local skateboard companies to put on a skateboarding demonstration. Stimulus skateboards (Bloomfield, NJ) and Halycon clothing (West Milford, NJ) provided us with about 10 really talented guys and they put on a great show. At the end of the demo there were so many kids begging us to let them ride the ramps we couldn't hold them off anymore. They were just too stoked to take no for an answer. The demo ended in a free skate session. We literally had to pull the kids off the ramps when it came time to break down the demo area.
Towards the end of the demo we announced the winners of all the raffle drawings. Everyone was happy about the prizes. We also tossed out a bunch of free product and kids went nuts for it. Shortly afterwards the fireworks started flying.
The recreation committee asked us to show that there is support for our project in the community. The reception we received from the people of Newton exceeded our expectations and proved to us that we are doing the right thing. Our resolve is stronger then ever. We would like to thank the Newton Chamber of Commerce and the Newton recreation dept for inviting us to be a part of Newton Day. This was a great venue for getting our advocacy project started. We would also like to thank all of our sponsors for their help with this event: Xtreme
Grind in Sparta, NJ for donating almost all of the product we
raffled off and for promoting the demo |
They love free skate stickers!
